Management During Treatment

  • Various degrees of pain during treatment

  • Various degrees of mobility

  • Difficulty with oral health care procedures

  • Drug-related complications - bleeding, immune suppression with some medications

Questions to Ask 

  • Evaluate the patient's use of toothbrush and floss.  Suggest or provide modifications when needed.

  • Consider the patient's dexterity when planning treatment

  • Carefully evaluate temporomandibular joint.  75% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis have involvement.

Clinical Findings 

  • Short appointments

  • Allow patient to make frequent position changes if needed

  • Provide physical supports such as pillows or rolled towels to provide suppport for deformed limbs, joints or neck
